One area needs cable ladder installed. In another, the routes are ready for cable pulling. A third needs low-voltage cables terminated and test records completed. An enquiry for “electrical labour” could cover all three, but the supplier needs to know which work each person will do.
The team may change as those areas progress. Describing the upcoming work helps the supplier propose people whose experience fits each stage and identify where the same electricians could cover more than one activity.
Match the role to the work
| Role to request | Typical work | Useful details for the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Cable containment installers | Installing cable tray, ladder, basket, trunking, conduit and supports to coordinated drawings. | The specified system, support details and installation areas. |
| Cable pullers | Pulling, routing, dressing, securing and labelling power, control, data or fibre cables. | Cable types and quantities, routes, cable schedules and access arrangements. |
| Electricians | LV installation and wiring for distribution, lighting, small power, earthing and plant supplies. | The systems and equipment involved, drawings and relevant installation experience. |
| Electricians for cable termination | Glanding, lugging, identifying and terminating LV power and control cables at panels, boards or equipment. | Cable construction and sizes, termination details and equipment requirements. |
| Electrical testers | LV pre-energisation inspection and dead testing, with results and defects recorded. | Required tests, instruments, test sheets and reporting arrangements. |
These roles can overlap. An electrician with suitable experience may install containment, terminate cables and carry out specified tests. Confirm the duties when selecting the team so people can move between tasks as planned.
Be specific about containment and cables
For cable containment, include the system specification or a drawing extract. Tray, ladder and wire basket use different components and support arrangements. Legrand’s data centre cable-pathways brochure shows the range of systems a crew may encounter.
In a data hall, “containment” can also mean the panels and doors around server aisles. Ask for rack and aisle containment installers when that is the work required.
For cable pulling, describe the cables and routes, including overhead work or risers, and confirm who supplies the pulling equipment. State whether dressing and labelling are included. Copper data termination, fibre splicing and cable testing require their own brief and suitably experienced people; including fibre in a pulling schedule does not include those activities.
Define the termination and testing work
For termination, identify the panels or equipment, cable sizes and connection details. For testing, specify the inspection and tests required, the records to be completed and who will review the results.
The installation and testing covered here concern LV systems that are de-energised. Dead tests can include protective-conductor continuity, insulation resistance and wiring verification. Megger’s installation-tester information distinguishes dead testing from live circuit measurements. Final certification and sign-off need an agreed responsible person; supplying testers does not automatically provide that authority. Live working, energisation and full commissioning are outside this scope.
Example labour enquiry
The following is a hypothetical request for one phase of a project:
We need ten cable pullers and an electrical working foreman for six weeks. The work is LV power and control cable installation on overhead trays and through risers. Pulling, dressing and labelling are included; another team will handle termination and testing.
We can share the cable schedule and route drawings. We will provide the pulling equipment and access plant. Our electrical supervisor will set daily priorities, with the working foreman coordinating the crew and reporting progress or access issues.
The actual quantities, access and programme will help establish the team size. Include the location, start date and any required qualifications when sending the enquiry.
Discuss your electrical team with Meistra
Meistra supplies experienced EU-national tradespeople for data centre construction across Europe, many with previous data centre experience. We provide cable pullers, containment installers, electricians and electrical testers. For larger teams, a working foreman can work alongside the crew and liaise with your site management.
Send us the work you have coming up, the dates and any available drawings or schedules. We’ll discuss the people needed for that phase.
